CV Advice

The importance of a well written and presented CV is sometimes underestimated, this is often the first contact clients will have with you so you should view your CV as a ‘sales tool’ something that will get the readers interested from the get go.

The basic structure of a CV should follow the format below:

  • Personal Details
  • Education – Where your study was taken and what grades you achieved.
  • Work Experience – Starting with the most recent role first you should aim to show the level of experience and responsibility you have, try to use bullet points where possible highlighting any key achievements in your role. Large sections of text are often ignored as clients want a short, sharp snap shot of your experience and to not be bogged down with reams of unecessary information.
  • Interests – It is good to offer potential employers an insight into the person who is applying for a role outside of their academic and work experience.

Interview Advice

Preparation preparation preparation!

Before the interview it is advised that you:

  • Look through the job specification in detail, look at the key responsibilities/requirements of the role and think about examples from your recent work that you can draw upon to demonstrate your suitability for the position whilst you are in the interview.
  • Research the employer – look at the firms website, find out about their competitors and check for any news about the firm by looking at sites such as www.thelawyer.com, www.legalweek.com and www.legal500.com
  • Make sure you know where the interview is and how long you need to leave to get there, if necessary make the journey the day before.
  • Prepare some questions for the interview and think about why you are right for the role and why you want the role.
  • Think about your personal presentation – you would think this went without saying but it is surprising the number people that get this wrong – If you need advice on what to wear ask your consultant but a good suit and polished shoes is a start. Try to avoid arranging an interview on a dress down day, if this can’t be avoided let your consultant know so they can pre-warn the client.

Following your interview give your recruiter a call as soon as you can after the meeting whilst the information is still fresh in your mind this way we can get back to the client with your thoughts and get some feedback for you too!
